Synergy: August Tournament

Dear Synergists,

The August tournament is underway and you can win lots of great prizes, including hundreds of points as well as lots of features! Please read the following instructions carefully.

Tournament Rules

The tournament will be divided into two contests: one for prose, one for poetry. Each contest will have three prompts to choose from. You may enter both contests, and you may write for more than one prompt. However, you may only submit one entry maximum per prompt.

Entries must be submitted in the form of text deviations or PDFs. Scraps, stash, or journals will not be accepted. Mature literature must be marked with the maturity filter. Entries of an explicit nature will not be accepted. Entries that violate deviantART or Live-Love-Write rules will not be accepted.

There is no minimum or maximum length required. 

This is not a collaboration with your partner. However, you will be expected to provide critiques and support for your partner throughout the tournament. Synergy journals will continue to be posted for feedback and status updates with opportunities for more points.

Tournament Details

Prose Contest Prompts:

a) The narrative of your story will take place on a planet that is the size of Jupiter. It orbits a star that is three times the size of the sun and is dangerously near to the end of its life. You must design a life form or a society that would exist on this planet, and create a story from this situation. Examples: This planet's equivalent of humans are trying to escape from the inevitable death of their sun. A plant on this planet that is sentient due to the planet's evolution narrating the fight for its rights to not be eaten. A naturalist admiring an animal native to that planet (keep in mind the effects of heavier gravity and so on - this planet need not be like Earth at all). The life of one of the planet's inhabitants. A government scandal. b) Choose an established character from history and write their story. Examples: Write the mystery surrounding the death of Edgar Allan Poe. Try a fantasy story from the viewpoint of Amelia Earhart, or a comedic portrayal of Magellan's journey across the seas. c) Write in response to the prompt: Three. Examples: The story of three connected people. The magical power of three. The mathematical role of the number three. A person named Three. Metaphorical power of three (complete number - beginning, middle, end). Three times a person does something, or something happens three times. Earth as the third planet. A house number, or a place named Three.

Poetry Contest Prompts:

a) Write a series of ten poems. Each poem must be connected in some way and share a loose central topic. Examples: Write ten different limericks, sonnets, or acrostics to portray ten different angles to a story, or tell ten different characters' experience of the same event. Haikus about ten different aspects of something, like love or nature. Write about ten stages in a person's life. b) Write a poem in free verse about your first or most memorable experience being completely terrified of something. You must identify (however vaguely) the event or thing that scared you. Examples: Leaving home. Illness - either yourself, or somebody you love. Your worst nightmare. A movie or book that scared you in some way. The idea of something, like being attacked or getting lost. The ocean, heights, or spiders. Realtors. c) Write in response to the prompt: Precious. Examples: Something or someone the narrator loves, and why. Addiction or obsession. Ideas or things that are vital to all people and society, like honesty or air. Gollum.

Tournament Judging & Prizes

The prose and poetry contest will each be rewarded separately. Each contest will combine the entries in response to all of its prompts for judging. First, second, and third place winners will be selected by the Live-Love-Write staff: DrMeh, RollingTomorrow, and KoronaMosel. Two honorable mentions will be selected for each contest.
